(Ted talk, must watch)

Janine M. Benyus (born 1958 in New Jersey) is an American natural sciences writer, innovation consultant, and author. Benyus graduated summa cum laude from Rutgers University with degrees in natural resource management and English literature/writing. She works towards restoring and protecting wild lands.Benyus has authored six books on biomimicry, including Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature. In this book she develops the basic thesis that human beings should consciously emulate nature’s genius in their designs. She is also President of The Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit organization whose mission is to naturalize biomimicry in the culture by promoting the transfer of ideas, designs, and strategies from biology to sustainable human systems design. In one of her TED talk “BIOMIMICRY IN ACTION” she conveys  message for inventors. Resolving a design problem, look to nature list. There you’ll find inspired designs for making things waterproof, aerodynamic, solar-powered and more. In her speech she reveals dozens of new products that their cue from nature with spectacular results. Janine Benyus starts her speech by saying I want to reveal something that we have forgotten that we used to know as well as we knew our own names and that we live in a components universe that we are part of a brilliant planet and we are surrounded by genius. Biomimicry is a new discipline that tries to learn from those geniuses and take design advises. She mentions that the organisms and the eco systems knows how to live here gracefully on this planet. And shows her photography of the beauty of organism and how it designs its own daily life. Janine shares her personal story about how she was amazed by the fact that her young neighbour Cody questions her if she designed the wasp nest which has been created by the wasps in her yard which had her thinking why Cody would have thought if she had designed it because it was precise, big and architecturally defined?

In this planet we are not the first one to build house for our young. Whats happening now in this field called biomimicry is that we are remembering that other living organisms on this planet are doing very similar to what we need to do but they do it to live gracefully on this planet for billions of years. What the biomimics the nature’s apprentices are focusing on the functions. They have asked themselves before they design something is “How would nature solved it if it had to?”

She explains about how the biomimicry helps to solve a design by understanding the organisms around us. Few slides she explains about organisms and its fascinating natural power which could help the inventors to solve a design simpler.

  • She talks about how the bird Kingfisher and Bullet train is related and how it helped to solve a problem

.

  • How does Nature Repel Bacteria?

  • How does Nature Gather water from fog?

  • How does Nature use CO2 as a Building Block?

  • How does Nature gather the sun’s energy?

  • How does Nature strengthen with Minimal Material?

  • How does Nature build Multiple Functions into one Material?

Janine Benyus questions her self, fascinated by the natures beauty and acknowledges people about how fascinating the nature is and how these beautiful natures invention could be used to solve designs. Each and every organisms has been designing its everyday  life and fascinates people by its incredible outcomes. We can take it as an inspiration or derive the essence of its design and implicate in our design and research to develop solutions to our problems which could benefit the future earth and humanity by creating new products and materials with simpler solutions and methods just like the graceful organisms.
